A bittersweet comedy between life and death

Paradise is a bitter comedy set in a Slovenian retirement home. Using masks and physical theatre, it explores themes of aging, loneliness, and human dignity. The production is based on authentic memories of the residents, weaving them into a mosaic of stories. However, Paradise is not sentimental – it oscillates between melancholy, absurdity, and cathartic laughter. Director Spiazzi extensively employs commedia dell’arte techniques. The masks allow him to combine grotesque elements with a tender atmosphere. Paradise reminds us that even at life’s end, there is room for laughter, beauty, and the power to make decisions. Beneath its subtle subtext, it also touches on the profound question of whether a person has the right to end their own suffering.

Slovensko ljudsko gledališče Celje is a professional theatre with its own ensemble of actors as well as artistic and technical teams. Today, many leading theatre creators, directors, and actors regularly work on its stages. The theatre has two venues and premieres up to seven new productions annually. During the season, it welcomes up to 60,000 spectators. Its main mission is to create contemporary theatre of the highest artistic standard.
