“Perhaps it would be better if people did more of nothing.”
An Essay About Nothing is an experimental theatre piece created as a master’s project by Lukas Roth at the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Switzerland. The central theme of the production is the contemplation of “nothing.” Between moving forward and moving backward, between inhaling and exhaling—within this framed space, within this brief moment—there exists a turning point, and perhaps within it, there is nothing. The concept of nothing may seem banal or provocative, yet for the creator, it is fundamental. Lukas Roth explores what happens when nothing occurs—whether it is the opposite of everything, a state of existential silence, or a paradoxical moment in which, despite everything, change becomes possible. Is nothing the opposite of something? What happens when we die? What ceases to exist then? And what follows the end?
The performance blends absurd moments, live music, visual minimalism, and movement experiments, leading the audience to a feeling that, in fact… nothing happened—and yet, everything happened.
The Dimitri Academy was founded by the clown and actor Dimitri from Ascona. The main aim of its teaching has always been to connect theatre with circus arts. The founders drew inspiration from commedia dell’arte, clowning, and pantomime. In 2006, the Dimitri Academy became part of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland. Over time, new fields of study were established at the school, including a research department focused on physical theatre, clowning, and figurative arts.
