“Don’t cry, because I’ll cry too.”

When I was little and my mother cried, I would tell her: “Don’t cry, because then I’ll cry too.” And we would cry together. When I was twenty-three, I told her: “Don’t die, because then I’ll die too.” But that didn’t happen. When your mother dies, it’s as if someone tears out your insides—with their bare hands—from your chest—and even a bit worse. Who does a daughter become when her mother dies?

A Polish student, inspired by Mira Marcinów’s book Bezmatek (Queenlessness), decided to create a performance about what it means to be a daughter. When your mother dies, are you still a daughter? When do you stop being a daughter? How much can a mother be loved? Is the love between a mother and daughter the greatest love in the world?

The Białystok branch of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw was founded in 1975. Acting and directing have been taught here since 1978, and since 2018, the academy also offers studies in puppet theatre technology. The school is among the most influential theatre schools in Europe, providing students with opportunities to collaborate with prominent artists from Poland and abroad. It initiates artistic and research projects and serves as a laboratory for new approaches in both didactics and the arts. Since 1979, it has hosted the International Puppet Theatre Schools Festival biennale, which brings together over 200 young artists each year. The school also promotes openness to people with special needs and strives for democratic and ethical education and creation.
